The Trevi Fountain is one of the most famous fountains in Rome. It was designed by Nicola Salvi and completed in 1762. The fountain consists of a triumphal arch structure with a large niche in the center occupied by the god of the sea, Neptune. He standing on a chariot shaped like a shell which is pulled by two horses – one wild and the other calm, reflecting the changing moods of the seas. This group of figures was sculpted by Paolo Bracci. The two statues on either side of the main group represent Salubrity and Abundance and are by Filippo Valle. The large basin at the front of the fountain represents the sea. It is traditional for people to turn their backs to the fountain and toss a coin into it, to ensure that they have a happy return to the city.
